7 of these 8 read exactly the same today, the pick among them. Foam holds nothing yet that tells those apart, so which one it calls the pick is arbitrary. That is learned from people surfing them and logging what it was really like.

About Balangan, today's pick

Level

Intermediate

Type

Reef

Best swell

SSE to NW

A long, fast left wall over flat reef with several sections, occasionally linking the whole reef for over 300 metres on its day. It walls up nicely at mid to high tide and gets hollow when bigger, a good step up for confident intermediates before the heavier reefs nearby. Best on a south-west swell with south-east trades, prime in the dry season from April to October. The coral is sharp and shallow at low tide, where the end section breaks straight onto reef.

Heads up. Shallow reef at low tide, strong currents on bigger swells, sea urchins, crowds in peak season.
